Arriving at the port in Tangier after our ferry trip from Spain, it was a short 10 minute walk to Hotel Continental (be prepared for hustlers on the way). The hotel is located in the old area of Tangier, and is gated with security. At 22/night, the hotel is a steal compared to hotels of similar quality in Europe. The hotel is perched overlooking the port and the sea, which offers a nice view if your room faces that direction. There is free WiFi available, and the electrical plugs are the same as in Spain.

The hotel serves a small but satisfying free continental breakfast each morning on the terrace. For a hearty snack, head just down the road and buy a stack of hot crepes with honey or chocolate for 4Dh from a street vendor. One negative point about the room, though, is that the showers were often running out of hot water (so make sure you shower early).

Hotel Continental is less than a 5 minute walk from the Medina and the Souk, a 10 minute walk from the America Legation Museum, and about 15 minutes to the beach and the new area of Tangier. When you want to visit the Caves of Hercules, just ask the front desk to call a Grand Taxi (the cream-colored ancient Mercedes Benzes). It should cost 250Dh round trip to the caves. A one way trip from the hotel to the airport costs 150Dh in the Grand Taxi.

In the old part of the city near the Medina, be wary of people trying to rip you off or scam you (this includes nearly everyone who speaks to you). Be especially careful at night when you will likely be offered drugs constantly (HIGHLY illegal in Morocco - say no without any room for confusion). We didn't have any sense of physical danger, just be aware of your surroundings and keep your head on your shoulders.

Tangier is a good introduction to Morocco with easy access from Spain, and a great place to spend a few days exploring. Hotel Continental was the perfect choice for us: cheap, great view, secure and a convenient location.
